Honoring G.W.

G.W. CarlsonAs we noted early last month, this is a momentous semester here in the History and Political Science departments at Bethel University: the last term in which G.W. Carlson will be a full-time member of the faculty.

Yes, G.W. is retiring. (The verb; definitely not the adjective.) All are invited to a reception in the Bethel University Library on Wednesday, May 23rd, 4:30-6:00pm to see him off. UPDATE (4/10/12): We’ll have a brief program ca. 5:00pm, with a film about GW, some words from his colleagues, and presentations of some gifts.

And if you’d like to help us honor a man who has helped shape Bethel for a good half-century, please consider doing one or both of the following:

Make a donation to the Bert H. and Bernice Carlson Memorial Scholarship

Set up in honor of G.W.’s parents, this fund awards scholarships each year to several History and Political Science majors who demonstrate both academic achievement and financial need. Your gift will help us continue to keep the awards at the intended level.

Donate online (On the “Designation” drop down menu, choose “Other.” In the next field, type “Bert & Bernice Carlson Scholarship.”)

Send us your favorite memory of G.W.

Stories. Quotations. Photos. We’re looking for your memories of G.W., which we’ll edit into a special book to be presented at the May 23 reception.

If you’d like to contribute to this book, e-mail your memory to history-department (at) bethel.edu.

Thanks for your assistance! And while we’re excited to release G.W. to his new life of full-time grandparenting, please pray for us: it’s still hard to imagine a Bethel without him.
